The Myers-Briggs Foundation website (www.myersbriggs.org) explains that the purpose of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality assessment is to make Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types understandable and useful in our lives. The essence of the theory is that what appear to be random variations in our behavior are actually quite consistent and are due to the basic differences in the way in which we prefer to use our perception and judgment, generally with a preference over one or the other. The MBTI also looks at three other pairs of personality characteristics. First, how we focus on the world and where we put our attention – either on our inner life or on the outer life of people and things. Second, whether we put more attention to the information that comes in through our five senses, or is more attention paid to the patterns and possibilities in the information that we receive. The final pair looks at how we make decisions and whether we put more weight on principles and facts or on the people and the concerns of the people involved in the decision.
There are many uses for the MBTI assessment. It can help you better recognize various stages of personal growth and development and offers tools to further your personal journey. Knowing your MBTI type as well as the type of persons you are in relationship with can help you appreciate and understand the differences in your relationships. It can also help you in choosing a career and managing career changes throughout life. And, in the workplace it can help you work better with others, manager your own work, and appreciate the strengths and differences in your work relationships and teams.
